Introduction

We are a fast-paced signage company that is currently seeking a detail-oriented and technically skilled Structural Cost Estimator to join our dynamic team. This role is ideal for an individual with a strong background in structural design, accurate project costing, and the ability to manage council submissions efficiently. You will be at the intersection of engineering, compliance, and cost management—playing a vital role in delivering structurally sound and regulation-compliant projects on budget and on time.

Duties & Responsibilities

Structural Design & Planning

  • Design structural elements for signage including pylons, wall-mounted signs, gantries, and steel frameworks
  • Produce detailed structural drawings and calculations for internal use, manufacturing, and council submission
  • Evaluate site conditions and advise on structural integrity and feasibility of proposed signage
  • Communicate regularly with the design team to ensure alignment between concept and structural practicality
  • Collaborate with third party Engineers

 

Costing & Estimation

  • Prepare accurate and itemised cost estimates covering materials, labour, transport, equipment, and subcontracted services
  • Conduct value engineering assessments to optimise cost efficiency while maintaining structural integrity
  • Review drawings, specifications, and client briefs to identify cost impacts and offer alternatives where appropriate
  • Update and maintain costing templates and pricing databases
  • Materials specification management

 

Council Submissions & Compliance

- Oversee and ensure that subordinate:

  • prepare and compile all required documentation for signage-related building plan approvals
  • track the status of council applications, respond to queries, and manage resubmissions if necessary

- Liaise with municipal planning departments, structural reviewers, and other authorities to ensure timely approvals

- Ensure compliance with all national building regulations (SANS), municipal by-laws, and industry safety standards

 

Work-in-Progress (WIP)

  • Ensure that WIP costings are completed at every financial year end

 

Coordination &  Communication

  • Collaborate closely with the Scheduling Department throughout all phases of the project
  • Participate in operations and production meetings to provide technical insight on structural and costing elements
  • Assist managers on the factory floor with technical documentation, project timelines, and installation readiness
  • Conduct on-site inspections and provide technical support during manufacturing and installation phases 
  • Collaborate with production, design, and installation departments to ensure practical and buildable solutions 
  • Cooperate with Stores in terms of sourcing non-standard materials

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • Degree or Diploma in Structural or Civil Engineering – or related field
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in structural design and cost estimation
  • Experience in signage, steel fabrication, and manufacturing industry preferred
  • Proficiency in structural design software – e.g. AutoCAD, Solid Works, etc.
  • Solid understanding of council submission processes and compliance regulations
  • Proficiency in Building Information Modelling (BIM)
  • Solid knowledge of building codes
