Description

 

Primary Purpose: Constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard; and installs doors, frames, and door hardware using carpenters hand tools and power tools, and conforming to local building codes.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Studies blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required, such as lumber or fiberboard, and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated
  • Selects specified type of lumber or other materials;
  • Prepares layout, using rule, framing square, and calipers;
  • Marks cutting and assembly lines on materials, using pencil, chalk, and marking gage;
  • Shapes materials to prescribed measurements, using saws, chisels, and planes;
  • Assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them together with nails, dowel pins, or glue;
  • Verifies trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenters level;
  • Erects framework for structures and lays subflooring;
  • Builds stairs and lays out and installs partitions and cabinet work;
  • Covers subfloor with building paper to keep out moisture;
  • Applies shock absorbing and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls;
  • Fits and installs pre-fabricated window frames, doors, door frames, and hardware;
  • Constructs forms and chutes for pouring concrete;
  • Erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level.

 

 

Qualifications

Requirements/Qualifications:

 

  • High school diploma
  • Three (3) years commercial construction experience
  • Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy
  • Apply shop mathematics to solve problems
  • Plan work and select proper tools
  • Perform a variety of duties which may change often
  • Rate information using standards that can be measured or checked
  • Physically, workers must be able to: Climb and maintain balance on scaffolds and ladders; lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 lbs.; reach for, handle, and manipulate objects and materials; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl, and see well (either naturally or with correction).
