Beginning Date 2025-2026 School Year

 

Salary:  Grade 40 Step 1 If turning over License to Deming Public Schools

               Grade 33 Step 1 If Journeyman with No License       

 

Terms of Employment: 240 days

 

 

 

 

JOB GOAL:

Possess or qualify for a MM98 license in the state of New Mexico, and be willing to be the qualifying party for Deming Public Schools. Under direction permit, when applicable, and perform installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures and systems.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs contractor-level plumbing in the installation, repairs and maintains of a wide variety of plumbing fixtures and equipment, such as water closets, urinals, valves, control devices, pumps, water heaters, toilets, faucets, pumps, water and sewer lines and gas and air lines.

Installs, repairs and maintains sewer lines; digs down to the lines or opening, cleans

out and makes necessary repairs.

Conducts water sampling.

Repairs and maintains plumbing lines conducting chemical and human waste.

Replaces defective parts in plumbing fixtures and systems and repair existing systems; repairs or replaces water and sewer lines.

Rebuilds and replaces toilet valves, faucets and plumbing valves.

Determines problems with water systems.

Repairs or replaces drinking fountains or related parts.

Repairs back flow prevention devices.

Installs rough plumbing; sets fixtures, move vents and rough plumbing and reinstall fixtures; works from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches.

Installs, maintains and replaces systems for lawn sprinklers including automatic, semi-automatic and manually operated types; assures that primary water lines are correctly connected.

Troubleshoots, detects and repairs gas leaks, and the ability to perform gas line repairs.

Services, repairs and maintains automatic chlorinator and water treatment system.

Performs soldering to complete repairs and maintenance as required.

Assists other trade personnel and perform minor carpentry, electrical repairs and other maintenance work as assigned.

Estimates materials and labor needed.

Maintains records related to work performed.

Orders plumbing supplies and materials according to established procedures.

Communicates with administrators, other skilled maintenance personnel and other concerning plumbing issues and information.

Digs ditches and trenches; cuts holes in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings.

Operates a District vehicle to conduct work.

Trains and provides work direction to other maintenance personnel as required.

Operates a variety of maintenance and plumbing tools and power equipment such as pipe threading equipment, power drill, saws, grinder, toilet auger, soldering equipment, air compressor, powder activated nail gun, jack hammer and other hand and power tools; maintains assigned equipment in an effective and safe working order.

Perform related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Methods, materials, shop math, tools and equipment used in skilled plumbing work.

Applicable plumbing codes and regulations.

Knowledge of water & gas shut offs.

Rules and regulations involved in inspecting, testing, repair and maintaining records for backflow prevention.

Technical aspects of field of specialty.

Operation and use of hand and power tools and equipment.

Shop math.

Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.

Chlorine treatment systems.

Basic soldering techniques.

Basic record-keeping techniques.

 

ABILITY TO:

Perform Contractor plumbing duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures and systems.

Inspect, test, repair and certify backflow prevention devices.

Repair and maintain water heaters and boilers.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Work cooperatively with others.

Meet schedules and time lines.

Maintain routine records.

Use a variety of tools and power equipment utilized in the basic trade.

Lift objects weighing up to 70 pounds.

Work from blueprints, shop drawings and sketches.

Perform heavy physical labor.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to: completion of an apprenticeship or training program and four years journey-level plumbing experience.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence,

and memos ability to write simple correspondence.

Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid New Mexico driver's license and driving record acceptable to the District for insurance purposes.

Either possess or qualify to obtain a State of New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department MM 98 license and be the qualifying party for Deming Public Schools.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning

supplies, pails and unloading trucks.

The employee will lift and/or move up to 70 lb.

The employees will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in inside environmental conditions. The employee frequently works with a video display terminal for prolonged periods.
