    Job Summary

    The Lead Plumber assists the Foreman and Assistant Foreman in supervising and assuring timely and quality work is performed by plumbing department employees on job sites and in monitoring contracted services. The position also assists in ensuring safe working conditions and procedures. The position is responsible for monitoring the adequacy of parts and equipment inventory.
     
    Essential Functions
     
    • Trains, coordinates, and ensures the effectiveness of plumbing journeymen, apprentices, and temporary workers employed by Granite School District.
    • Installs, repairs, and replaces building plumbing systems.
    • Oversees and participates in cleaning plugged drains and repairing or replacing pipes, faucets, flush valves, sinks, toilets, urinals, fountains, thermostats, and valves.
    • Inspects repairs and new installations of plumbing systems, fixtures, and water heaters and ensures code requirements are met.
    • Hires, supervises, and inspects the work performed by contract service providers, ensuring that work is done properly and code requirements are met within a reasonable time frame. 
    • Ensures safe working conditions and that district safety protocols are followed.
    • Supervises and participates in troubleshooting electrical controls for boilers, water heaters, refrigerated water fountains, and pumps.
    • Works on uni-vents, dampers, coils, fans, heat exchangers, air handlers, and associated heating equipment.
    • Repairs, replaces, and installs pumps and all their components.
    • Prioritizes and assigns work orders according to importance.
    • Tracks employee purchases and invoices to ensure proper purchasing procedures and district policy are followed as directed by the Foreman or Assistant Foreman.
    • Administers and coordinates backflow testing and tracking standards.
    • Coordinates and documents testing and sampling for lead and copper, ensuring district compliance with the requirements of the Utah Department of Environmental Quality.
    • Repairs or replaces swimming pool filters, piping, and other mechanical components of district-owned swimming pools, ensuring the strict maintenance of the water balance of chlorine and other chemicals in the pools.
    • Participates in training on safety equipment and hazardous chemicals.
    • Helps keep track of the necessary inventory quantities of plumbing parts and equipment to reduce project delays.
    • Coordinates with other trades to complete projects. 
    • May be assigned to participate in organizations, committees and sub-committees as needed.
    • Maintains professional competence related to changing techniques and developments in relevant fields.

    Required Knowledge and Skills
     
    • Basic computer skills
    • Understanding of relevant building and safety codes, including key aspects of OSHA, EPA, SDS, and ADA.
    • Knoledge of the District's Education Support Professionals' negotiated agreements and Board policies that govern Education Support Professionals' employment.
    • Familiarity with district procurement policies.
    • Working knowledge of district time and attendance procedures.
    • Ability to plan work and organize journeymen, materials, and equipment for specific projects.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to work as part of a team and maintain a positive and helpful attitude.
      
    Required Education and Qualifications
     
    • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
    • Requires a current, valid Utah Journeyman Plumber license.
    • Requires a current, valid driver’s license.
      
    Required Prior Experience
     
    • Requires a minimum of two (2) years of successful experience as a qualified, journeyman plumber.
      
    Note: The district reserves the right to make specific requirements for this position, however, when prior work experience has been evaluated to be particularly pertinent, some exchanges between training and experience may be authorized.
     
    Assigned Decision Making
     
    • Determines repairs and/or replacements of equipment as needed. 
    • Assists in hiring, promotion, retention, and performance review decisions upon request from the Foreman. 
    • Prioritizes work for specific jobs assigned. 
    • May determine whether specific equipment is dangerous to the user and remove the equipment or neutralize it in place.
     
    Non-supervisory Interaction
     
    • Interacts with maintenance employees, custodians, inspectors, contractors, district and school administration, vendors, and the public.

    Supervisory Responsibility
     
    • Supervises the day to day work of related staff, not exceeding 15 full-time employees. 
    • The staffing may temporarily increase to accommodate temporary employees. 
    • May supervise multiple trades on special projects.
    • Monitors the progress of apprentices assigned to ensure that District apprenticeship and training standards are maintained.
    • Motivates and encourages subordinates to promote a positive and productive work environment. 
    • Makes specific work assignments and monitors the performance of assigned employees.
    • Coordinates with contract service vendors and material vendors on projects

    Working Environment
     
    • Works in tunnels, trenches, attics, and high places.
    • May need to work higher than ground level using Ladders and motorized man-lifts.
    • May be subject to high voltage, heat, noise, dirt, chemicals, confined spaces, raw sewage, and hot and cold climate.
    • Some district emergencies may require additional irregular hours.
    • May experience occasional stress from emergencies and in meeting project deadlines.
    • Interruptions may occur while performing work requiring accuracy and concentration.
