Geotechnical Engineering

Overview

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in supporting mining project development and operations. This role will be critical in providing geotechnical expertise across the project life cycleβ€”from exploration and feasibility studies to construction and operations. You will work cross-functionally with geology, civil, environmental, and mine planning teams to ensure safe and efficient ground engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Site Investigation & Characterization

  • Plan and execute geotechnical site investigations, including borehole drilling, test pits, sampling, and in-situ testing.

  • Interpret and analyze geotechnical data to develop ground models and support engineering design.

  • Coordinate and oversee laboratory testing programs for soil and rock mechanics.

Design & Analysis

  • Conduct slope stability assessments (open pit and waste dumps), foundation design, and retaining structure evaluations.

  • Develop and review geotechnical designs for mine infrastructure, including haul roads, embankments, tailings storage facilities (TSFs), and underground excavations.

  • Perform geotechnical modeling using software (e.g., Rocscience suite, PLAXIS, FLAC, Slide).

Risk Management & Compliance

  • Support geohazard identification and risk assessments, including seismicity, ground movement, and water-related instabilities.

  • Contribute to geotechnical risk registers and mitigation strategies throughout project phases.

  • Ensure designs and recommendations comply with industry standards and regulatory requirements.

Monitoring & Support

  • Implement and interpret geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring programs.

  • Provide construction support and geotechnical oversight during earthworks, tailings facility construction, and pit/underground development.

  • Respond to geotechnical issues in real time with practical engineering solutions.

Reporting & Collaboration

  • Prepare technical reports, memos, and design documents for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Present findings and recommendations to project teams and management.

  • Collaborate with consultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies as required.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical, Geological, Civil Engineering or related field.

  • Master’s degree with geotechnical specialization (preferred).

Experience

  • 3–8 years of relevant geotechnical experience in the mining or heavy civil industry.

  • Experience in open pit, underground mining, or tailings storage facility projects is strongly preferred.

Skills & Tools

  • Strong analytical and technical writing skills.

  • Proficient with geotechnical software (e.g., GeoStudio, Rocscience, FLAC, Leapfrog).

  • Familiar with GIS and 3D modeling tools (ArcGIS, Surpac, Deswik is a plus).

  • Ability to work independently and in field environments.

Preferred Certifications

  • Professional Engineer (P.E./P.Eng) or working towards registration.

  • Mine Safety certifications (e.g., MSHA, First Aid) a plus.

Work Conditions

  • Mix of office and field/site work depending on project phase.

  • May involve remote fieldwork and occasional travel to mining sites.
